Roots Run Deep
Roots Run Deep
We are all a product of our past. The environment we grew up in, our choice of schools, careers, partners. Life that happened around us of its own accord, both good and bad.
None of us have had the same journey, and the path ahead will be different for each of us as well.
But what happens when we desire a change? When we’re ready to grow into something new?
Sometimes those roots of the past run deep, and it’s difficult to see a way out of our current circumstances. They can feel unmovable.
This summer has been hot and dry in Colorado, and pulling weeds in my yard has been difficult at best. I can pull with all my might, and while I might be able to tear off the surface of the weed, those stubborn roots remain.
Fortunately, this past week has brought much-needed rain to our area. All living things are breathing a sigh of relief with the nourishing moisture. Hard, compacted soil is expanding, allowing those stubborn weeds to be pulled more readily. Some I’ve pulled have even been nearly a foot long! As I pull the unwanted weeds, there becomes room in the soil for the plant growth that I am desiring for my garden.
Just like the relief a bit of moisture can make on our surroundings, we can heal bits of ourselves by taking the time to be self-compassionate.
To allow ourselves to get needed rest, nourishing food, and much needed movement. To find opportunities to feed our body, mind, and soul.
Our past may shape us, but it doesn’t have to define us.
We can learn to use our past circumstances to our advantage; to envision and create a better future for ourselves and our families. It starts by taking care of the most important person in your life.
You.
Because no one else can take care of you like you can.
I would encourage you to take stock today. Are there "weeds" in your life? Perhaps old thought patterns, negative self-talk, or emotional burdens that you need to pull in order to make room for the growth you truly desire?
